In an ongoing effort to monitor and stay ahead of the Corona Virus (COVID-19) we are in contact with local and state health resources daily. Additionally, to ensure a maximum level of protection those who request service from the Fire Department and the first responders who come to help, and ensure the ability of the department to respond at a high level, we are implementing an increased level of precautionary measures related to how we interact with some of our patients.
On medical calls, where patients are exhibiting symptoms that are similar to those associated with COVID-19 or have expressed to us that they may have been exposed to the virus, we will respond to the call wearing enhanced first responder personal protective equipment (PPE). These measures are a precaution and not intended to indicate any specific diagnosis.
The types of personal protective attire that you may see include, masks, gowns, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), coveralls etc. Again, these heightened measures are precautionary and a key part of protecting our first responders and patients while helping the community as a whole limit or prevent the spread of COVID-19 to the greatest extent possible.
Additionally, as we respect the privacy of all those that request service, some of the enhanced procedures being deployed necessitate activities being conducted in open air environments. Being in an open environment allows nature to minimize potential exposure through ultra-violet light exposure and disbursement in the prevailing winds. In order to protect the public, at the highest level, we will be establishing protective perimeters. These perimeters establish a significant distance between the general public and the activities at the emergency scene. We ask that everyone please understand that close proximity to one of these scenes is dangerous. Please heed our request to maintain a safe distance.
Finally, please remember that the members of the department are taking significant risks to provide care to all of you and are following directives, guidance and orders from others. Give them a break and don’t hassle them when they ask you to comply.
